Owen can't wait for first taste of Tyne-Wear derby
By Miles Starforth Newcastle United writer
MICHAEL Owen is relishing his game against Sunderland as a Newcastle United player after playing in Spain's legendary El Clásico and cutting his teeth in Merseyside derbies.
Owen missed both Tyne-Wear fixtures in his first season at St James's Park through injury.
And he scored in his last derby game, when Real Madrid beat Barcelona 4-2 at the Bernabeu in April 2005.
The 27-year-old striker vividly remembers that game – one of the biggest club fixtures in the world – and he knows tomorrow's sold-out game at the Stadium of Light will be no less passionate.
Asked about the Real Madrid-Barcelona fixtures, Owen told the Gazette: "We won 4-2 at home, and we lost 3-2 away.
"The scorers chart on the 4-2 win at home was fantastic. It was Ronaldo, Zidane, Raul and Owen, and then Ronaldinho and Eto'o for Barcelona, so that's five great players!
"That was good, but we got stuffed away and I only came on for the last 20 minutes. I had a header that nearly went in.
"All derbies are obviously different, and that in a way isn't a derby. It's just a successful two teams – they're miles apart. But they call it El Derby or El Clásico, and it's a fantastic occasion.
"Every derby's different, whether it's Liverpool-Everton or Newcastle Sunderland. I've never played in a Newcastle-Sunderland derby, and I'm looking forward to sampling this one."
Missing the two Newcastle-Sunderland games in his first year on Tyneside was just one of many frustrations for injury-hit Owen, who has started just 20 games since his £16m move from Real Madrid in the summer of 2005.
And Owen – without a goal in three games – is looking to take out his frustrations now he is injury-free and playing week in, week out.
He added: "Add it to many frustrations when you're injured. You miss games in general.
"Every time a big club comes to St James's, you want to be out there, and every time a derby comes round, you want to be out there.
"Add it to all the other frustrations – it's frustrating full stop being injured.
"And this is a game I'm looking forward to a lot."
