Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder has revealed he is pushing England striker Michael Owen hard as he attempts to get him fit before the end of the season.

The 27-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward returned to running outdoors earlier this week almost seven months after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament at the World Cup finals.

Owen still faces a gruelling fight for match fitness but Roeder will not be easing him back into the fold.

Roeder said: “The players were very happy to see Michael out on the grass running again. I saw him work myself the other morning and I would say he is back into serious running work.

“He was blowing very, very hard at the end of the running session. It is not a case of us easing him gently back to running, he was virtually at full blast.

“He certainly felt the effects of the physical session he did at the end because it took him a good 15 minutes to recover.
